A contractor and crew arrived Thursday morning to begin work on an apartment building in Plainfield that was condemned by city officials, forcing dozens of families to move out.

The landlord says he is hoping to get people back into their apartments on West Seventh Street as soon as possible. In the meantime, the city provided a hotel for five days to those that qualify.

City officials confirmed that some families stayed at the condemned apartment building Wednesday night.

Plainfield Councilman Richard Wyatt says, “They do have a shelter set up, but they were worried about their belongings, so they wanted to stay here. But today, we’re trying to put a system in place to make sure that everybody can move safely to the shelter.”

The contractor was upfront about the work that needed to be done, but he would not give his name or company name. However, he told News 12 New Jersey that he had a team of workers either on site or coming in Thursday to begin repairs.

Food and drinks were set up on Thursday morning to help families who will now have to vacate premises.

There was a bit of chaos Wednesday night when Charles Aryeh, one of the landlords, showed up to the property. Angry tenants were shouting at him, demanding him to take full responsibility for the 235 violations at the building.
