Prosecutors: Toms River woman accused of posing as a doctor without a medical license

A woman from Toms River is accused of posing as a doctor, treating patients and prescribing medicine without a medical license, according to prosecutors.
Maria Macburnie, 62, was charged with practicing medicine by an unlicensed person, forgery, health care claims fraud, and distribution of a controlled dangerous substance.
Prosecutors say an investigation revealed that between March 2022 and June 2023, Macburnie was seeing and treating patients while posing as a licensed medical practitioner, working out of Shore Medical Associates in Toms River. They say Macburnie presented herself as Dr. Fe Almazon-Condit - one of her relatives with an active license to practice medicine. During this time frame, prosecutors say Macburnie precribed medications, including controlled dangerous substances to patients.
It was also revealed that Macburnie issued multiple prescriptions written under the name of Dr. Almazon-Condit, according to prosecutors, and submitted multiple insurance claims and bills for services rendered during time periods when Dr. Almazon-Condit was unable to see and treat patients.
Police arrested Macburnie on Wednesday. She is currently being lodged in the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.
