More than 40 people were displaced after a three-alarm fire ripped through the Villages at Bey Lea apartment complex in Toms River on Saturday afternoon.
Authorities said the fire broke out at the complex a little after 1 p.m.
It took crews from multiple departments about five hours to get the fire completely under control.
They estimated a loss of about $6 million.
First responders said the fire started on the attic and then ripped across the roof.
"Weather played a huge factor and that's the reason why we had multiple departments here. Manpower was paramount and guys were falling left and right... just the heat," said Pleasant Plains Fire Department Assistant Chief Matt Yezzi.
Two fire fighters were treated for heat exhaustion.
Two residents also received care due to the stressful situation.
The American Red Cross was on the scene to provide any assistance to the displaced residents.
There was no word on what caused the fire as of Saturday night.
