Beachwood Beach in Toms River will be off limits for swimming for the entire summer due to not having enough lifeguards.

The town only received one reply when calls went out for lifeguard applications for the summer at Beachwood Beach. Notices were posted for months on the borough's website, the police page and social media accounts, according to Beachwood. The difficult decision was then made to close the beach off for swimming for the entire summer.

The borough says it even covers the cost for the American Red Cross Waterfront certifications and pays competitive hourly rates.

Beachwood Beach sits along the banks of the Toms River - several miles inland from the expansive Barnegat Bay. It’s popular with families of small children because of the calmer settings. This has also been a problem spot for swimming following heavy rainfalls. The beach is also usually one of the first ones to close because of high bacteria levels.
