Monday is the first day of summer vacation for most kids in New Jersey. It’s also the first day trained lifeguards return in full capacity at beaches.

After a tragic start at two unguarded beaches in Monmouth County over the last several weeks, beachgoers told News 12 New Jersey that seeing the men and women on the stands gives them a comforting peace of mind.

Maria Bouchard of Ridgefield Park says having lifeguards around makes her feel a lot better.

"I've…[swam] during rip currents and luckily got pulled in by a lifeguard. So, it makes me feel a bit more confident, definitely," Bouchard said.

Spring Lake's chief lifeguard Tony Hipsley says the lifeguards are ready to work.

"It feels it feels great. It's tremendous to have the entire beach open to have a full staff come in and be open seven days a week. We don't have to worry about what's happening during off-duty hours which is always a concern in the early parts of June," Hipsley said.

As lifeguards return, it also means beach badges will be required. In Spring Lake, lifeguards will be on duty daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Labor Day.
