Anti-fossil fuel activists heckled Gov. Phil Murphy during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Hoboken Monday morning.
The protesters chanted, “Hey, hey, ho, ho. Fossil fuels have got to go.” They were upset about plans to build a gas-powered plant in Newark and other fossil fuel projects.
The governor was in Hoboken to commemorate the opening of a five-acre park designed to help protect Hoboken against future storm surges made more severe by climate change.

“Through the above and below-ground flood mitigation structure, this park will detain up to…2 million gallons of rainwater to help combat chronic flooding,” said Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla.
The park sits on the site of a former chemical plant.
“The remains of the chemical plant have given way to this beautiful park, just as Hoboken's industrial past has given way to its vibrant present and future,” Murphy said.
The resiliency park includes a basketball court that doubles as a stormwater detention basin. It is the largest resiliency park in the state and one of the largest in the nation.
