Jersey City vigil celebrates the life of 32-year-old slain mother

A Jersey City community held a vigil Sunday night in honor of Norelis Mendoza, the woman whose body was found Wednesday off Route 440.
Mendoza's family said she grew up on Montgomery Street. Jersey City police blocked off that section where residents paused to remember her and celebrate the life that she lived.
All residents who attended were encouraged to wear purple as Mendoza's family welcomed everyone.
They also witnessed an outpouring of support from domestic violence support programs and national organizations.
News 12 New Jersey learned that 32-year-old Mendoza lived in the neighborhood for more than 25 years .
Her family did not want to go on camera, but she was remembered as being loved throughout the community.
"The family is still devastated. Nothing has changed, but we do realize that the way our family operates is that we have to find some kind of relief within each other. We have to find strength within each other, and we have to celebrate Nore's life," said her cousin, Geovanni Molina.
Mendoza's family said they will continue to fight for justice for her and all victims of domestic violence.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office announced Friday that 35-year-old Gregory Mallard, of Jersey City, was charged in her death.
Molina said there was a history of domestic violence in the relationship his cousin had with Mallard, who is also the father of her children.
