North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco has been subpoenaed as part of a criminal investigation into Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez.
Menendez is under investigation into whether improperly took cash and gifts from a Halal meat company in Edgewater.

Authorities say that the subpoena for Sacco is not related to this. They say they are seeking information about legislative changes in New Jersey.
A spokesperson for Sacco wrote in part, “Mayor Sacco has been assured that he is not a target of the investigation and was approached only as a potential witness, and he intends to cooperate fully and provide any requested information as he would with any law enforcement inquiry.”
Sacco was reelected Thursday to a ninth term as mayor.
