Police: 1 killed, 4 injured in crash when car made ‘improper pass’ on I-287 in Bridgewater
A 35-year-old woman from Perth Amboy died and four others were injured in a car crash Tuesday in Bridgewater.
Police say an investigation revealed Felipe Exposito-Sanchez, 24, of Linden was driving an Infiniti south on I-287. They say Exposito-Sanchez traveled off the left side of the road to “improperly pass” a Nissan car around 7:30 p.m.
After re-entering the roadway, police say Exposito-Sanchez's Infiniti struck the front of the Nissan. They say after the initial impact, Exposito-Sanchez traveled across the lanes, ran off the road to the right, traveled up an embankment and struck multiple trees. Exposito-Sanchez suffered serious injuries.
Police say Lissanne Reyes Mejia, a passenger in the Infiniti, died as a result of the crash. They say three additional passengers in the Infiniti sustained serious injuries. The driver of the Nissan was not injured.
Local lanes of I-287 southbound were closed for five hours following the car crash. The incident remains under investigation.
