One person was killed and two others were wounded in a shooting in Newark, according to the city's police director.
The shots rang out at around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday on the 200-block of Clinton Place. The crime scene extended two blocks down and one block over.
The victim has been identified as James Elam, 22, of Newark. The other two victims were taken to the hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds.
It was originally reported that there was a fourth person shot, however Newark Police Director Eugene Venable has since updated the situation.
George Washington Carver Elementary School was placed on lockdown during the incident because the school is close to the scene. Students and staff were forced to stay inside closets for nearly 15 minutes. The lockdown was lifted just before 3:30 p.m.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office and Newark Police Department are investigating. It is believed that this shooting is in retaliation to another shooting from last year.
No arrests have been made.
