A new study by the Tri-State Transportation Committee found that fatality rates for older pedestrians are much higher in New Jersey than in the rest of the country.
According to research, New Jersey pedestrians, 65 and older, are twice as likely to be killed by motorists. Chances of fatality triple for pedestrians over the age of 75.
"I try not to cross against the sign. It's dangerous,? said Bayonne resident Frank Dimeglio. ?Even though you see it clear, [there] might be a car that's parked that pulls out of spot."
The study group has recommended that street signs prolong the opportunity for pedestrians to safely cross streets in areas of high concentrated senior citizens.
Atlantic County was ranked first among the dangerous places for elderly pedestrians. Hudson County was second.
