The National Weather Service has issued a dangerous rip current warning for the Fourth of July holiday weekend after several deadly encounters with rip currents in New Jersey.

Four people have drowned this month at New Jersey beaches. Officials say that they were likely caught in the currents. They were swimming without any lifeguards.

Lifeguards tell News 12 New Jersey that they will be on high alert during the holiday as thousands of people flock to the Jersey Shore. They say that they expect parents to be vigilant as well.

“Parents, you can help us out. We can all do this together,” says Avon-by-the-Sea head lifeguard Jesse Le Vine. “It can be a win-situation. [Parents] can sit in front of their kids with their chairs facing the ocean and watch t hem. And we’ll watch them and together we’ll have a good day.”

A fifth person was just released from the hospital weeks after she was also pulled from the ocean.
