The Paterson Police Department is honoring an officer who was killed in a crash over the weekend while on duty.
Fellow police officers paid tribute to Officer Tamby Yagan with a special escort and transfer of the body to Yagan’s mosque in Wayne. The casket was covered in the American flag, while officers lined up to pay their respects.
Yagan, 41, died Sunday morning in a one-car crash on Getty Avenue. It was not immediately known if he died in the crash or suffered some type of medical emergency.
Yagan was a 13-year veteran of the Paterson police force and once served as a volunteer firefighter in Prospect Park.
Friends and loved ones say that Yagan was devoted to his Muslim faith, as well as to his family and his career in law enforcement.
“Very outgoing. Friendly to everybody. Like a brother to everybody,” says Prospect Park firefighter Douglas Struyk.
Friends say that Yagan leaves behind a young son. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at the Circassion Benevolent Association and Mosque in Wayne.
