Fire officials in Jersey City say that they are still investigating the cause of a large fire that injured several people, including a baby Wednesday evening.
The fire badly damaged the three-story, multi-family home on Grand Avenue. The building has been boarded up and residents say that the inside was gutted.
Three people were injured by the fire including a 6-month-old baby who was treated at the scene and taken to Jersey City Medical Center. That baby was released Wednesday night.
Firefighters also rescued a man from the basement of the home. Officials say that he suffered burns to about 20 percent of his body. One of the firefighters who helped rescue the man was burned on the face, but is expected to be OK.
The residents say that they do not know why the man was down in the basement, where the fire started. They say that there is no apartment unit down there.
Another man was seen running away from the house just prior to firefighters arrive. The Arson Unit is looking for that man for questioning.
About 20 residents lived inside the home. The American Red Cross is assisting them in finding temporary housing.
The residents say that they credit firefighters, as well as each other, for making sure no one was killed in the fire.
“It definitely could have been much worse,” says resident Dwayne Shurn. “I went out on the balcony and I looked down and I see all smoke – I ran right back in house and got everyone out.  Everybody from my floor and lady next door.”
Residents were allowed back inside the home Thursday to get some personal items, including a pet turtle.
