The American Dream megamall in East Rutherford is set to open after over 15 years in the making.
The owners of the mall and entertainment center recently announced that after the opening weekend there will be a fee to park for more than 30 minutes. There are also concerns about traffic in the already-heavily populated area. New Jersey Transit officials have put out the call for ideas on how to get people to and from the complex.
News 12 New Jersey’s Brian Donohue had an idea that no one else seems to be talking about – why not travel to American Dream by kayak?
To prove that it could be done, Donohue launched his kayak from the boat launch at Mill Creek Point Park in Secaucus and paddled his way down the Hackensack River toward the mall.
He said that his journey there was much more scenic than riding along the busy highways of northern New Jersey. He witnessed a bald eagle in a tree eating its lunch and encountered other kayakers out enjoying nature.
He finally arrived at the River Barge Park in Carlstadt, which has a free parking lot. And then he took a 20-minute stroll through nature the rest of the way to American Dream.
American Dream has been plagued by delays and other misfortunes ever since it was announced in 2003.
Now – 16 years later – a portion is set to open. This includes the Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park and an ice-skating rink. Retail stores and restaurants won’t open until March
