Neighbors in Smithtown filed a complaint that claims a man has been hunting deer in the community with a bow and arrow.
Theresa Bertrand says the hunter lives in a house on Ingelore Court and is upset that animals are eating his vegetable garden. Neighbors showed News 12 a ladder and stand just off the man's backyard that they say he uses to seek out deer. On Sunday, News 12 was told the alleged hunter asked his neighbor an alarming question.
"He was asked if a fallen deer should land in his yard, could he have permission to retrieve it," says Bertrand.
Bertrand says that's when neighbors called the police.
The next morning, Bertrand says they found a dead fawn in a neighbor's driveway that was "obviously killed by an arrow."
Neighbors do say the town "needs to do something" about the overpopulation of deer in the area.
"The population is getting out of control, but you can't have a bow and arrow in our backyards killing these poor creatures," says Stephanie Galter.
There was no answer at the door when News 12 attempted to speak with the alleged hunter. The state Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating the complaint. News 12's calls to the Town of Smithtown were not returned.
