McGreevey divorce lawyers finish closing arguments
Divorce lawyers for former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey and his wife wrapped up their closing arguments Wednesday.
The couple's fate is now in the hands of Judge Karen Cassidy. The judge is expected to make her ruling in about two months. McGreevey and his estranged wife, Dina Matos McGreevey, will be officially divorced at that time.
The former governor is fighting his wife's claim for alimony. She's asking for $2,500 a month in alimony for four years and $1,750 in support for their 6-year-old daughter. According to McGreevey, those payments work out to more money then he makes in a year.
McGreevey says he's too poor to pay alimony. Matos McGreevey's attorney, John Post, insists the former governor may be hiding close to $400,000.
The court battle could be prolonged even after Cassidy's ruling. The couple could be back in court if Matos McGreevey decides to push her claims of marital fraud.
