The Little Silver Borough Council held a meeting Monday evening after facing backlash over a cellphone tower that was erected in town.

The 95-foot-tall tower was recently put up in town, and many residents say that they want it gone. Three council members even expressed regret that they voted to allow the tower during Monday’s meeting.

"We really put our trust in you to do the right thing and to think that was the right thing to do for Little Silver is so upsetting,” said one resident.

The No. 1 complaint from the residents is that the tower stands about 470 feet away from the Markham School. They said that they were concerned that the radio waves from the tower would be harmful to the children.

Other residents said they were worried about their property values. 

"I don't like it. I promise you we are going to do everything that we can in our power,” Councilman Dane Mihlon told the residents. “You're our neighbors. We work for you. We get it."

But some officials say that the reason the tower was built was to improve communications for EMS and that it would save homeowners $2,300 in taxes over the 25-year lease period.

Mayor Robert Neff said that the town is monitoring the tower output and so far the radio waves are below FCC standards.

The council will not discuss what they should do with the power. They are speaking with Verizon and a decision should be made in the near future.
