Gov. Phil Murphy and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop led an interfaith roundtable discussion this morning at Temple Beth El in Jersey City.
The gathering began with prayer and continued with the acknowledgement that this continues to be a very difficult week.
A moment of silence was held to remember those who lost their lives in Tuesday's shooting.
Gov. Murphy says today's gathering is to come together and find as much common ground as possible so that love overcomes hate.
Mayor Fulop reminded everyone that if the most diverse city in perhaps the entire country can see this kind of evil, it can happen anywhere.
"If anti-Semitism and hate and racism can exist in a community that is so familiar with diversity, the takeaway is that it can really exist anywhere," said Mayor Fulop. "So it's going to be a long, long road back and it's going to take a lot of healing and a lot of time and I think the reason that we're here is because every single person at the table and in this room has a role to play in that."
The governor spoke and credited all first responders, including those in Jersey City that kept the tragedy from being far greater than it was.
