Environmentalists protest natural gas terminals
Dozens of environmental groups protested Wednesday against Gov. Jon Corzine?s recent support of natural gas terminal installation off the Jersey Shore.
Environmental advocates say the natural gas terminals, which have been proposed for Sea Bright, Sea Girt and Asbury Park, would likely increase pollution, harm marine wildlife and risk liquid gas seepage into the ocean.
Corzine offered support for the offshore liquefied natural gas plants, which would install underwater pipelines to transfer foreign natural gas to processing locations in New Jersey. According to Corzine, the projects would create jobs and boost the local economy, while driving down the price of natural gas used to heat homes.
According to environmental activist and Asbury Park restaurant owner Marilyn Schlossbach, there is no evidence that this natural gas project would directly benefit her community or New Jersey. Often, she claims, companies sell gas to the highest bidders.
"I don't think there's anything proven that it's going to be beneficial to me, you, New Jersey or the United States of America, for that matter," Schlossbach says.
