New Jersey drivers are being warned to be on alert for young trick-or-treaters this Halloween.
Children are twice as likely to be killed by a vehicle on Halloween night as any other day of the year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Police are warning drivers to slow down and have patience and also warning parents to watch their kids.
“That’s always our biggest concern is making sure that in a town like Cranford, you have a lot of cars and a lot of people,” says parent Amy Imhof. “We just want to make sure that they’re safe when you’re having fun.”
Police departments in many New Jersey towns say that they are prepared for the uptick in pedestrian traffic.
“We have offices that are constantly driving around the neighborhoods making sure that everybody’s safe,” says Cranford Police Detective Steven D’Ambola.
Police are also asking parents to be mindful about what their children are dressed as this Halloween.
“Some of the costumes are dark and some of the masks prevent visibility for the children,” D’Ambola says. "We want them to just be as safe as possible. If they’re wearing masks, take them off when crossing the street.”
Parents are also urged to give their children flashlights or glow sticks or put reflective tape on costumes.
Some towns have put an 8 p.m. curfew in place, in an effort to get the children off the streets once the sun has gone down.
There is a national petition to move Halloween celebrations to the last Saturday of October, citing safety concerns. That petition has more than 35,000 signatures.
