New Jersey drivers made their rain-soaked treks home Monday from their Memorial Day weekend destinations.
Mike Parvez and his two kids took a break at the Cheesequake Rest Area in South Amboy while heading home to Queens, New York from Atlantic City. While normally a 2 1/2-hour drive, Parvez said it was taking double that.
Earlier in the day, along the Garden State Parkway in Wall Township, southbound traffic appeared fine. The northbound side, however, was a slow-go with break lights aplenty, though there were a few patches of smooth sailing.
Many drivers said the poor conditions likely worsened traffic as the rain caused some to head home earlier than planned.
As a result of the traffic influx, rest stops along the Parkway were filled more than usual.
AAA had estimated that nearly 900,000 New Jersey residents would drive to a holiday destination.
