Police have an alleged burglar in custody who they say they were able to catch with the help of surveillance cameras and the public.
Surveillance cameras captured images of Neptune resident David Shirey as he broke into several cars and stole wallets, jewelry and other items before going on a shopping spree with stolen credit cards. He was arrested Sunday, a day after the burglary activity was recorded.
The cameras followed Shirey, 30, all over from a gas station in Cresskill to a store in Northvale and eventually to the Palisades Mall.
Demarest Police Chief James Powderley credits the cameras as well as the public for the apprehension. Several people came forward with information after seeing pictures of Shirey in the media.
Though Shirey is behind bars, police remind residents to lock their car doors and bring any valuables inside.
Police say Shirey confessed to more than 13 burglaries and could face several years in jail.
