Cold weather leads to several water main breaks in New Jersey
The cold weather has been causing havoc on New Jersey's water systems, leading to several water main breaks across the state.
A large water main break Tuesday in Jersey City disrupted light rail service during the morning commute and left dozens of residents without water.
Resident Jared Wolovsky says he lost water at his home following the break in a 12-inch water main near Washington and Essex streets. The break also caused Jersey City Medical Center to be without water for a short time.
"I used to live in Manhattan. It happened a little more frequently," Wolovsky says. "It's an old city, old pipes, the cold temperature is going to affect it."
Tuesday also saw water main breaks in Passaic and Lodi.
Towns like Jersey City and Hoboken have seen several water main breaks over the past few weeks. In addition to Tuesday's break, Jersey City also saw a water main break on Old Bergen Road near Cluster Avenue.
Hoboken had a water main break Dec. 1 that flooded out streets near the Lincoln Tunnel.
Many of the pipes that run through Hudson County are decades old, and officials say cold weather causes them to break.
Water services to Jersey City was restored by Tuesday afternoon. Road repairs lasted into the evening.
