Twelve members of the New Jersey first responder community were honored for their heroism on Thursday, including two Newark firefighters who died while fighting a cargo ship fire at Port Newark.
This is the first time that firefighters were recognized during the Blue Mass. It was held at the Archdiocese of Newark for the 30th year. The event honors all law enforcement for their sacrifice.
“I think it's important for the Catholic community and others to recognize people in law enforcement and in public service -- not only to thank them for it, to show our solidarity in prayer - but also to honor those who have fallen in the line of duty and to try and comfort their families,” said Cardinal Joseph Tobin.
Also honored was Deptford Police Officer Robert Shisler who was wounded during a traffic stop in March. He died two months later from his injuries.
