The death of Det. Joseph Seals in Tuesday’s shooting now brings the total to 35 Jersey City police officers killed in the line of duty since the department started keeping records in 1881.
The last death was Det. Melvin Santiago, who was just 23 years old and only six months out of the police academy when he was killed back in July of 2014.
Santiago and his partner were responding to a robbery call at a pharmacy when the suspect beat the security guard there and stole his weapon. He then waited for the police officers and ambushed them.
Before that incident, Det. Marc DiNardo had been with the Jersey City Police Department for 10 years when he was killed in 2009. DiNardo was 37 years old and was part of the Emergency Service Team that responded to a robbery. The suspect shot at police and then ran to an apartment.
DiNardo made his way into the apartment and was shot.
Det. Seals was a 15-year veteran of the Jersey City Police Department.  He leaves behind a wife and five children.
