Ceremony marks 3 years since officer’s slaying
Friends and family of a fallen Jersey City police officer held an emotional tribute on the third anniversary of his death.
Loved ones of Detective Melvin Santiago gathered at Liberty State Park Thursday to honor his memory.
Santiago's mother thanked her son's colleagues for their support, and spoke about keeping his memory alive.
"I will never see that beautiful smile look my way or hear his voice. I will never get another hand, hug, or kiss on the cheek, a phone call or a text,” she said. “The only thing we have left are memories."
Santiago was gunned down on July 13, 2014 when responding to a call. The man who killed him was targeting police officers.
A foundation was established in Santiago's name. His mom says they've made donations to several community organizations.
