2 NJ theaters cancel Kathy Griffin’s shows amid Trump photo fallout
Two New Jersey theaters have announced the cancellation of Kathy Griffin’s scheduled shows amid fallout from a photo of the comedian posing with a likeness of President Donald Trump's severed head.
Both the State Theater in New Brunswick and the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood have canceled the comedian’s November shows. Anyone who bought tickets will receive full refunds.
The two venues are the latest to pull Griffin’s shows after she released the controversial photo.
When asked about the fallout, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, an ally of Trump, called Griffin “disgusting.”
“She's disgusting. Ya know, that's all. I mean I could pile on more if you want, but I think she's disgusting. It's completely outrageous, and I don't think anybody should hire her again for anything,” the governor said.
Griffin apologized within hours of the images appearing online. They were met with swift and widespread condemnation.
Trump later tweeted that Griffin "should be ashamed of herself" for posting the images.
Griffin and her attorney held a press conference Friday in California in which the comedian discussed the photo and video she and celebrity photographer Tyler Shields posted on Tuesday.
Griffin's attorney, Lisa Bloom, revealed that the comedian has been contacted by the Secret Service.
Bloom said Griffin has retained a criminal attorney, who also appeared at the press conference in which Griffin apologized again for the images. Griffin said she is the subject of a Secret Service investigation, but did not provide any further information about the inquiry or if she was cooperating.
Griffin said she will not refrain from joking about Trump in the future.
The images prompted CNN to fire Griffin from her decade-long gig hosting a New Year's Eve special with Anderson Cooper.
The 56-year-old comic has faced controversies before for her abrasive humor, but none as widespread as the one generated by Tuesday's images.
The Associated Press news wire contributed to this report.
