A 16-year-old Monmouth County Eagle Scout took it upon himself to do something special for the country’s veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Bailey Ferrugia transformed Wampum Park in Eatontown to a site honoring local veterans killed in action, as part of his Eagle Scout Service Project.
“Whenever we have Veterans Day and Memorial Day here we just have the wreaths that are in for about a week and they just get taken out. I didn't like that,” Ferrugia says.
Bailey researched the names of those killed in action from Eatontown dating all the way back to the Civil War. With some help from Home Depot, his friends, parents, and girlfriend, Ferrugia placed permanent markers in the park to represent the servicemen killed.
“I put up the stone crosses in Island 3. There was no permanent markers,” the scout says. “I've been coming here since I was 6 years old and I noticed there was nothing permanent and that really upset me.”
Ferrugia belongs to Troop 49, which has its roots inside the now-closed Fort Monmouth. The fort is located very close to Wampum Park.
Ferrugia’s parents say that they are extremely proud of the project.
“He's very excited to see everything that he did. It was a great project,” says father Keith.
“I can't believe all of this came from his head. I just can't believe it,” mother Eileen says. “He's been looking forward to this since he started scouting when he was 6 years old."
The memorial will officially be revealed Saturday at 11 a.m. during a Veterans Day ceremony held at Wampum Park.
