Business owners near the Pulaski Skyway say the constant construction on the bridge is impacting their bottom line.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation says that crews are just weeks away from completing work on the top of the skyway, after which crews will begin to work on the lower deck of the bridge.
Business owners tell News 12 New Jersey that ever since the construction project began four years ago, they have been negatively impacted.
Wilson’s Carpet sits right below the Pulaski in Jersey City. Owners say that they have lost 50 percent of their revenue due to ramp closures and excess traffic caused by the work.
“The traffic, it’s horrendous,” owner Dianne Wilson says.
Wilson says that most of her customers who live in the western portion of New Jersey no longer come by due to the traffic.
“I’ve lost pretty much 90 percent of my business out west there,” Wilson says. “We just don’t get the flow of traffic any longer. They’re diverted. They don’t even come past here.”
Wilson also says that once work begins on the lower deck, part of her property will be taken through eminent domain.
Wilson also says that sometimes debris from the constructions falls onto cars in the parking lot. There are large curtains around the area to protect the vehicles. But Wilson worries that these curtains will also block the view of her business.
"I'm not sure how our customers and clients will be able to find us. We are going to ask for lights and signs that will say we are open,” she says.
