Weehawken preps for crowds without fireworks
Despite several reminders that the Macy's fireworks display will be over the East River this year, the town of Weehawken is preparing for people to show up anyway.
Signs are lined up along JFK Boulevard East along the Hudson River reminding residents that there will be no fireworks display on that side of Manhattan this year, for the second year in a row.
However, Weehawken officials say they plan on shutting down the roads overlooking the Hudson River in anticipation for people showing up, like they did last year. They are asking all out-of-town visitors to get where they need to be in the area before 4 p.m. JFK Boulevard East will be shut down soon after.
Weehawken residents say they don't mind, and hope they may see some fireworks anyway.
"There's still a good view and there are some fireworks that go off in Jersey City," says resident Dennis Cernosia.
Cernosia's wife Michele agrees, "It's still a reason to be out, just outside and it's beautiful here."
Many of the bars and restaurants in the area say they are also preparing for large crowds going out to celebrate.
The fireworks display in Liberty State Park in Jersey City is expected to kick off at around 9 p.m. Saturday.
