The nation is reeling after a day of surreal chaos and insurrection at the nation’s Capitol.
The day began with President Donald Trump addressing protesters who had gathered outside the Capitol to support his call to overturn election results.
Then Vice President Mike Pence didn’t side with the president. He gaveled in a joint session of Congress with each chamber debating separately to approve votes of the Electoral College. Some Republicans said they would oppose the electoral results in their states.
Chaos then erupted and supporters stormed the Capitol. Lawmakers were brought to safety after being told to wear gas masks.
A woman who was shot during the chaos has died.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi along with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called on the president to demand all protesters to leave immediately.
President-elect Joe Biden made a public statement for the president to "step up."
President Trump later tweeted asking protesters to go home.
The Capitol is now secure.
