At least one New Jersey activist group says it plans to protest near the United States Women’s Open Championship, which begins Thursday morning at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.
The group's members said women’s rights are under attack by President Donald Trump, adding that they don't think the women’s tournament should be held at the course.
According to a USA Today report, the president threatened to sue the United States Golf Association if the event was moved.
Tournament officials declined to comment on the USA Today report, but said that if Trump shows up at the course this weekend, they will be ready.
“We’ve had three presidents attend our Open championships in the past,” said US Open Championship Director Matt Sawick. “This is the president’s golf club, and if the president chooses to come, we would welcome him.”
Some of the women participating in the tournament said they are just focused on the game and not politics.
“There’s only benefit to you writing the articles. There’s no benefit to us giving comments…about this,” said golfer Cristie Kerr when asked for comment by reporters. “Whatever we can say can be taken out of context, and we are here to just play golf.”
Plans to play the US Open at Trump National go back about five years, long before Trump ran for president.
