(01/20/06) MANALAPAN ? Two commuters were struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing Route 9 in Manalapan Friday.

Investigators say the incident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. According to individuals in the area, the victims were possibly two regular bus commuters who parked in a lot along Route 9. One of the victims has been identified, but police are withholding that information pending family notification.

According to police, the victims were not using the crosswalk at the time of the incident. Other commuters say they are not totally surprised by the deaths because many people frequently ignore the crosswalks. Police, who are classifying the deaths as an accident, say the driver involved is in stable condition and cooperating with police.
