A Trenton firefighter was grazed by a bullet Tuesday night when a dozen gunshots were fired next to their firehouse.
Two of the bullets ended up inside the station on Calhoun Street just after 8 p.m. One of the bullets struck the top of the firehouse refrigerator while the second one went through the wall into the second-floor gym where the firefighter was working out.
The shots came from a nearby housing complex, where police found 16 shell casings.
No one is in custody as of now, although police said they are working on several leads.
The one firefighter who was grazed by the bullet was treated and is recovering at home.
"My firefighters shouldn't have to go through this. A couple of them are traumatized because they were in a safe setting in the firehouse waiting to go to an emergency, and while waiting, they get shot. They're going to have to go through some counseling. I'm praying for them, praying for the city, praying for the safety of the residents and public safety personnel of Trenton," said Director of Fire Emergency Services Kenneth Douglas.
Firefighters do wear bulletproof vests when responding to calls.
Mayor Reed Gusciora said the city needs to hire more officers to help stop the recent wave of gun violence.
