The 5G race is on as technology advances around the world
Technology experts say that 5G is the next internet revolution.
The technology can be used to power smart homes in smart cities, self-driving vehicles and robots.
“What we’re experiencing today with 4G will be 100 times faster with 5G,” says Gil Santaliz, CEO of New Jersey Fiber Exchange.
And now 5G technology is at the center of tensions between the United States and China. The country that develops the technology first can control information.
“We will not be intimidated. We will not stand down,” said Vice President Mike Pence.
New Jersey has the pieces in place to help roll out 5G. When cables travel across the Atlantic Ocean, they rent space at New Jersey Fiber Exchange before going out to North America. A new underwater cable across the Atlantic is set to launch in September. Paid for in part by Google and Facebook, companies that thrive off Internet speed and strength, and the ubiquity of devices.
There are still questions about the safety of 5G. Lawmakers like Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal have asked the FCC to provide documents about it.
