Two men suspected of robberies on consecutive days were in custody at University Hospital in Newark Monday after their car crashed while running from police.
Police say 25-year-old Michael Dutton, of Newark, and 22-year-old Banel Cuevas, of East Orange, violently burglarized a Nutley gas station Thursday. They say the armed men then held up a Union Avenue liquor store Friday, allegedly using the same stolen Ford Taurus as the previous day. Belleville police, aware of the type of getaway car, had additional unmarked cars on the street and chased Dutton and Cuevas while driving away in the rain. Police say the two suspects then spun out of control and hit a tree.
According to police, Dutton and Cuevas had $1,100 from the gas station in their possession, as well as a newspaper clipping describing the Thursday burglary. Police expect both to recover from their injuries and set bail at $250,000 cash each.
