Ridgefield residents who evacuated Monday due to a water main break are moving back in to their homes accompanied by fear and uncertainty over who will claim liability for the mess.
"I really don't know what's going on," says resident Kathleen Gagliostro. "I don't know who's gonna assume responsibility and liability for this mess."
Residents living along Hamilton Avenue and Chestnut Street were forced to evacuate their homes after a 36-inch main burst Monday morning. They were cleared to return later that evening, but are finding water damage and mud all over the place. Some won't be cleared to re-enter until a building inspector gives the OK.
United Water is advising homeowners with damage to call their risk management department to document it. A handful of residents are considering a class-action lawsuit if the company does not cover damages.
Ridgefield residents are still being asked to boil water prior to consumption.
