The owners of a Camden County gym that has repeatedly defied the governor’s order to remain closed during the COVID-19 pandemic have been arrested on contempt charges.
Atilis Gym owners Ian Smith and Frank Trumbetti were also charged Monday with obstruction and violating the Disaster Control Act. They were processed at Bellmawr police headquarters and released later Monday morning.
Smith and Trumbetti reopened the gym in May despite an executive order keeping all gyms closed in New Jersey. After receiving numerous summonses, they went so far as to take the doors off the gym so that the state could not lock them out.
A state judge had ruled Friday that New Jersey authorities could shut down a gym.
Smith posted a video on Instagram of police officers outside the gym early Monday morning.
“Welcome to America 2020, where feeding your family and standing up for your Constitutional rights is illegal. [Gov. Phil Murphy] flexing his little tyrant muscles finally - only took him 70 days,” Smith wrote in his post.
“This is gonna be fun in court. If this doesn’t alarm you, you’re part of the problem,” Smith added.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
