Debris could be seen everywhere, including fallen trees -- many of them splintered in half. One resident described the trees as spears.
"All of a sudden, there's whistling and then sounds, sounds like a locomotive coming in," says Stephanie Brokate.
Trees were also seen on homes and cars. Many wires were down, and lights were out. The powerful burst had left thousands in the county without power.
"These big trees normally have a good root system and they just toppled like dominoes," says Toms River Mayor Maurice Hill.
Hill walked through the township's neighborhood left with widespread damage.
"Don't even think it was a micro burst, I think when they finally look at this they're going to classify this as a tornado," says Hill.
Police say no injuries were reported.
