Many residents who live along Union Hill Road between Monroe and Manalapan are expressing frustration over the recurring flood damage to their properties that they say is caused by drivers who ignore street closure signs.
While much of Union Hill Road between Monroe and Manalapan was shut down due to flooding Sunday, residents say many drivers ignored the closure signs, furthering damage to their properties.
Resident Joyce Moore tells News 12 New Jersey that when drivers ignore the closure signs and barricades, they push waves of water into their yard, damage their fencing and leave behind debris.
She says the damage from the flooding has gotten worse in recent years with continued development in the area.
“If it's a detour, it’s a detour, and if you are coming through [a closed road,] you should be ticketed,” she says. “They are destroying my property and everyone else's here. We are frustrated."
Moore says she would like to see more drudging and ditches built on the side of the road. She says she would also like to see stricter enforcement of the signage, noting that Manalapan and Monroe Township should be mindful to put detours up early so that cars won’t be tempted to drive through.
