Heavy rain led to flooding problems in Monmouth and Ocean counties Sunday morning, News 12 meteorologists say.
Flood warnings are in place along rivers and streams in some parts of the state in the wake of heavy rainfall.
Some residents say they woke up to water at their front steps.
News 12’s Alex Zdan spoke to residents of the Eaton Crest apartments in Eatontown, where about half the streets along complex are flooded.
Some say that this is the third time in eight months that the complex is seeing flooding.
“Sometimes it'll rain harder than that for a whole weekend and it won't flood,” says resident Zach Burkey. “It’s unpredictable. I come out here all the time when it rains and just make sure my car is OK.”
But other than moving their vehicles to higher ground, there seems to be little that can be done for protection before the next rain.
Over 20 miles south in Jackson Township, residents of East Veterans Highway were also dealing with what they say is a periodic problem.
Storm water overflows the creek, clogs the drains and drowns their yards and inundates their basements.
“It was like being at the ocean with the waves crashing,” says resident Catherine Veve. “All you heard was water.”
Larry Cella, who owns the nearby Honky Tonk Ranch, says the neighbors have been trying to get a response from the county for years.
“My one pony almost drowned the other night,” he says. “If we weren't home, the animal would have died. I just don't know what to do next. I don't know who to call.”
