Powerful thunderstorms have produced major flooding and damage in New Jersey and have left over 350,000 people in the dark.
The storms crossed through New Jersey Monday afternoon into the evening with heavy rainfall and strong winds.
The winds caused trees to become uprooted and utility poles to come crashing down.
Jersey Central Power and Light reported over 250,000 customers without power Monday evening. PSE&G reported nearly 100,000. Monmouth County officials reported that 45% of the county was without power at the height of the storm.
New Jersey utility companies are reminding their customers to stay away from any downed utility poles and electrical wires. Customers should immediately report downed poles to the police and the utility company.
There wasn’t any estimate for restoration at this time.

Major flooding was also reported in towns like Metuchen, where first responders had to rescue some drivers who became stuck on the roadway.
Monday’s storm produced about 4 inches of rain in parts of the state. Rain is expected to continue through the overnight hours.
