State looks into guidelines for 'less lethal' force
On the heels of an investigation into the shooting of a teen in Roselle, the state is now looking into new guidelines for police when it comes to using ?less lethal? ammunition.
At a public hearing Tuesday, state Attorney General Anne Milgram announced she has appointed a panel to examine new rules for less lethal force. Somerset County?s police academy director testified he believes the alternatives save lives, but warned that result is achieved with the right training.
Some of the alternative less lethal ammunition options include rubber bullets, bean bag bullets and possibly Taser guns. Some cases in which the alternatives could be used include crowd control, domestic violence disputes and when a mentally disturbed person becomes a threat.
Rubber and bean bag bullets are already an option in some police departments. However, they can only be used when deadly force is justified.
The panel is supposed to give its recommendations to the attorney general next month.
