A South Orange man with cerebral palsy finally got what he has been asking for this new year -- elevators at the South Orange Station.
Jonathan Factor was unable to use the station because of the stairs to the train platforms. He knew that if there were elevators he could take NJ Transit from the station and cut time off his commute. For five years he wrote and called transportation officials in New Jersey and Washington, D.C., pressing them to install elevators.
His persistence paid off and now instead of spending two and a half hours commuting to work it takes about half that time. The South Orange Station is one of 35 so-called "key stations" that New Jersey Transit is renovating to improve accessibility.
