Some New Jersey Republicans distancing themselves from Donald Trump
Some of New Jersey's Republicans say that they are distancing themselves from Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump after new video surfaced showing Trump making lewd remarks about women.
In the 2005 "Access Hollywood recording, Trump is heard boasting about wanting to grope attractive women. Hours after the footage was leaked, Trump issued an apology.
"I said it, I was wrong," he said.
But the apology was not enough for some Republicans, who have begun to condemn what Trump said.
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan announced that he would no longer defend Trump and would focus on House races leading into the November election. Speaker Ryan stopped short of withdrawing his endorsement. Some of New Jersey's high profile-Republicans are also expressing their disappointment.
Former New Jersey Gov. Christine Whitman says that the tape showed that Trump is unfit to hold public office. She said that if he won't' step down, she will vote for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno is also criticizing the nominee. She posted on Twitter "No apology can excuse away Mr. Trump's reprehensible comments degrading women. We're raising my [three] boys to be better than that."
Gov. Chris Christie has remained quiet on the controversy. The governor reportedly helped Trump prepare for Sunday's debate at Trump Tower. He did not attend the debate.
The governor also backed out of Sunday political talk show appearances on behalf of Trump.
Trump called any Republicans who said they were abandoning him "self-righteous hypocrites."
