Somber anniversary shrouds Newark
? Monday marks the one-year anniversary of the schoolyard killings that rocked the city of Newark.
Iofemi Hightower, Terrance Aeriel and Dashon Harvey were killed August 4 last year as they hung out at the playground of Mount Vernon School.
Natasha Aeriel, Terrence Aeriel's sister, survived and has helped police identify suspects in the triple murder.
Mayor Cory Booker says the tragedy brought the city together.
About $2 million was raised for surveillance cameras in high-crime neighborhoods.
For the first half of this year, the murder rate was down by one-third.
And the site of the slayings is being turned into a new green space.
Family members and friends of the victim went to the schoolyard Monday to remember their loved ones. Iofemi Hightower's aunt, Gloria Hightower, says her family is trying to take things one day at a time.
"It's hard today," said Gloria Hightower. "We're just taking it one day at a time, trying to cope with it, day by day."
