Newark-based Continental Airlines is cutting thousands of jobs and grounding planes due to skyrocketing fuel prices.
Beginning in September, Continental will cut 3,000 jobs nationwide. Additionally, 16 percent of routes and 11 percent of seats will be cut.
The airline plans to retire 67 of its older jets over the next two years as well.
Bloomfield travel agent Judyth Jackson predicts Continental will cut down on non-stop routes, meaning customers could expect more layovers.
"Most people don't like connections, because they have to get off then get back on, but with these cuts they may just have to do more of that," says Jackson.
Continental provides 14,000 jobs in New Jersey and is the largest employer in Newark. Seven out of 10 planes that fly into Newark International Airport are associated with the airline.
