For the first time in the team’s history, the Sky Blue FC women’s professional soccer team will take the field at the Red Bull Arena to play in front of the largest crowd in the club’s history.
The club normally plays its home games at Rutgers University, but the team will get to play at Red Bull Arena because they will be playing against Reign FC, which includes 2019 World Cup Golden Boot winner Megan Rapinoe.
Members of the team say it will be a great opportunity.
“We go to these stadiums where other teams have the crowd cheering for them and when we score it's hushed,” says Sky Blue FC captain Sarah Killion. “Now coming into this stadium and having a crowd that's going to be cheering galore if we score … that's just going to drive us to play even harder.”
The Sky Blue team includes U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team forward Carli Lloyd and goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, who played in the World Cup for Team Canada.
“Coming off the World Cup was absolutely incredible. I think we saw a lot of positive momentum moving forward with the [National Women’s Soccer League] and women's leagues across the world,” Sheridan says. “We want to keep pushing that forward, so for us this is a big first step to play in a bigger stadium, to get a bigger crowd and to really push Sky Blue in a positive direction.”
Tickets sales for the games have beaten a record of 6,000 set 10 years ago.
“The hype in general right now around women's soccer - I think we're all so excited to get out on the field and show what we can do individually and collectively as a team," Killion says. “Prove that women's soccer can be so enjoyable to watch.”
The match kicks off Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are still available on Ticketmaster.
