Relics of the youngest saint in the Roman Catholic Church have arrived in Newark.
The relics of St. Maria Goretti, also known as the "Little Saint of Great Mercy," are making their first tour of the United States.
The first stop was at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, a Newark cathedral.
St. Maria's skeletal remains are encased in a wax likeness of the saint, who died in 1902 at age 11 during an attempted rape in Italy.
She reportedly forgave her attacker before and after her death.
St. Maria is the youngest person ever to be canonized by the church. She is credited with countless miracles that occurred after her death.
And the relics' first stop in New Jersey is no coincidence. The young saint actually has living relatives who call the Garden State home.
Raymond Tiovaneetti is St. Maria's great nephew. He is descended from one of the saint's three brothers, who all immigrated to Newark from Italy beginning in 1910.
